I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Tim Doughtie in 1989 when I began working for Biggs/Gilmore Associates with Tom Gardo, John David Rose and Porter Thompson.  Tim was, at that time, renting office space in the same building that once occupied Gardo, Doughtie & Rose.
Tim would often greet me at the front desk (where I sat) on Monday mornings by singing “You Are My Sunshine” to me in only a way Tim could, with that silly face and funny hand gestures...and it would always make me smile, no matter what.  Tim would leave my sides splitting on a daily basis with his jokes, crazy voices and outlandish stories.  But what I will remember most is the banter between Tim and Porter, and how they would just pass each other in front of my desk and carry out hysterical, impromptu routines as if they had been scripted and practiced for months in advance.
When I moved away from Hilton Head in 1995, my husband and I would visit with my parents who owned a home in Sea Pines.  When we would go down to the beach and spread out our blankets and chairs, it wouldn’t be long until we saw Tim and Betsy walking on the beach, and they would stop and chat.  At that time, my mother was battling breast cancer, and Tim would always take the time to take her hand sweetly and to see how she was feeling.  When she did pass away in 1996, Tim was out of town during her service, and he took the time to write me the most beautiful note, apologizing for not being there for me, and wrote in descriptive, loving detail on how special mothers are—it meant the world to me that he cared so much.  Whenever my husband and I are on vacation in Sea Pines, I still to this day, look in the distance waiting to spot Tim and Betsy on their beach walk.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Doughtie family, and especially with my good friend Porter, who has also lost part of his laughter and heart in his best friend, Tim.
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
