Residents, community leaders remember Doughtie
Hundreds attend beloved friend's memorial
From the Island Packet, October 8 |
A cross section of local residents filled the 650-seat Hilton Head High School auditorium Sunday afternoon to say goodbye to Timothy C. Doughtie.
Spirited gospel music and the lyrical words of the Rev. John M. Miller highlighted a memorial service spiced with laughter and clapping -- and a healthy dose of the humor that endeared Doughtie to the community. The 61-year-old businessman, activist and volunteer died Oct. 1 after a short illness.
"Tim's fun was the kind that healed you, not hurt you," said Doughtie's close friend, Porter Thompson.
Stuart Silver said, "He was a good friend of mine, but he was a better friend of our community."
Thompson announced that the board of Hospice Care of the Lowcountry plans to name its building on Palmetto Bay Road for Doughtie. Doughtie served on the board and was a strong supporter of hospice. |

Beloved Islander Tim Doughtie Passes Away At 61
From the Island Packet, October 2 |
Timothy C. Doughtie, whose sense of humor and extensive community service made him one of Hilton Head Island's most beloved characters, died Sunday at his home in Sea Pines after a short illness. He was 61. Doughtie was known for his wacky wit and story-telling. He added a clever touch to many charitable causes. And he created a couple of gags -- Rumples the surfing dog and a "wind ensemble" of local businessmen called the Phart-O-Phonics -- that got national attention.
But Doughtie had a less publicized serious side.He volunteered for nearly three dozen service organizations on the island and beyond, with much of his energy focused on local public schools, the arts, health care and hospice. |
